Cape Malay-spiced mince baked under a golden egg custard — comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

  • 1kg beef mince
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 2 slices bread, soaked in milk
  • 2 tbsp chutney
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 50g raisins
  • 3 eggs
  • 250ml milk
  • 3 bay leaves
  • Salt & pepper
  • Oil

Method

    Fry onions until soft. Add curry and turmeric, cook 1 minute.

    Add mince and brown. Stir in squeezed bread, chutney, vinegar and raisins.

    Season and spoon into a baking dish. Press flat.

    Whisk eggs with milk and pour over the mince. Top with bay leaves.

    Bake at 180°C for 30–35 minutes until the custard is set and golden.

    Serve with yellow rice and blatjang.
